Casey Anthony Trial - Who Are The Jurors?

I went back through the blog and pulled together some info on each juror. Hope you find it helpful!

The Twelve:

Seat No. 1: Juror #1398 (Female, 67 yrs old). Married, 2 kids, 3 grandchildren. She is a counselor. Prior to that, she was a nurse. Said she's smelled dead bodies before. Juror was on a murder trial jury in the past. Experts included blood spatter, ballistics, mental health witnesses (there was no penalty phase in that case). When asked if she watches "Nancy Grace," she replied, "I choose not to."

Seat No. 2: Juror #1019 (Male, 30s). Married with two young children. He works in IT for Pinellas County. He said he doesn't believe in the death penalty, but he can follow the judge's instructions to consider it as an option in penalty phase.

Seat No. 3: Juror #1055 (Female, 35 yrs old). Juror is going to school to become a nurse (there were a great number of nurses in the jury pool!). She is single, no kids. She said she had not even heard of the case until very recently.

Seat No. 4: Juror #1319 (Female) This is the super religious lady who said she didn't like to sit in judgment of others. The state tried to use a peremptory strike to remove her. Defense issued a Batson challenge (basically claiming the state was trying to remove her because of her race, and that's not allowed). The state asked the judge to declare the peremptory challenge race-neutral -- they didn't want to get rid of her because of race but because of her inability to sit in judgment of others. The judge refused to remove her because the state did not raise or question her about that during voir dire. She could be problematic for the state, but you just never know. Jurors you think might lean one way sometimes go the opposite direction.

Seat No. 5: Juror #1429 (Female) Juror is retired, divorced and lives with her boyfriend. Has 3 kids (52, 49 and 48 yrs old). Three grandchildren. One of her sons and her grandson have had drug-related run-ins with LE. She's a diabetic.

Seat No. 6: Juror #1025 (Male, 33 yrs old). He is a chef who develops and sells equipment in the food industry. He's done cooking segments on TV a couple of times. He has two young children, ages 6 yrs and 21 months.

Seat No. 7: Juror #1007 (Female, 41 yrs old) Divorced. Has worked for several nonprofits in the child welfare field. Mother is an estate attorney. A man with a knife broke into juror's apartment about 20 yrs ago. He didn't realize she was home and she was able to escape. He was caught and convicted. She said her experience with justice system was "comforting" -- she knew the investigating officer and her mom went to school with the state's attorney. Defense challenged her for cause (saying she was equivocal about putting aside pretrial publicity), but the judge disagreed and denied the challenge.

Seat No. 8: Juror #3015 (Female, 50s). She is married and has two sons close to Anthony's age (27 and 33 yrs old). Works as a service rep for Verizon. Her dad is retired LE. She said while she wouldn't substitute her sons in making decision, she would hope that if her sons were ever in this position, those judging them would do so fairly.

Seat No 9: Juror #3185 (Male, 53 yrs old). He is single. Has no children, but is the "favorite uncle" to his sibling's kids. Cares for a friend who had a stroke. His nephew recently became an LE officer. His general opinion of LE is that he's "pleased to have them protecting us."

Seat No 10: Juror #3310 (Male, 57 yrs old). He has never married, no kids. Juror works for Verizon as a retention specialist. About 15 yrs ago, went through a program to get a certificate so he could apply for LE work, but there were no jobs at the time and he never pursued it further. He is the juror whose sister served time in prison for being involved in tying up and robbing their father. She has turned her life around and the family is very proud of her, he said.

Seat No. 11: Juror #3016 (Male, 30s). He is a PE/Health teacher for 10th-graders. He's working online toward his master's degree in special ed. Initially said he could not vote for DP, but after judge talked more with him, he said he could consider it and would follow the law and instructions in making decision.

Seat No. 12: Juror #3140 (Female). Married with two adult children from first marriage (33 and 28 yrs old). One 2 yr old grandchild in TN. Has worked at Publix for 15 years as as cook. She described herself as "an old-fashioned lady." Like Cheney Mason, she wears hearing aids.

The Alternates:

Alternate No. 1: Juror #3093 (Female, 48 yrs old) Married, two adult children (25 and 22 yrs old). She is a surgical tech. Served as a juror in a civil suit. She likes baseball and hockey and makes yarn/weaves.

Alternate No. 2: Juror #3170 (Male). Married for the third time. Has a 23 yr old son from first marriage and 2 teen stepchildren who live with him. Teaches US Government. Several years ago, was pulled over and arrested for DUI, but he says he was ultimately charged with careless driving (plea agreement). Seemed very much to want to be on the jury because of civic duty and said it would be a teaching tool for his classes later.

Alternate No. 3: Juror #4013 (Female). She is a widow. Her husband was in prison on a drug conviction. They were estranged most of that time. Has a 12-yr old son. She herself was charged with writing bad checks at some point in the past (specifics were discussed at sidebar). She works at a car dealership.

Alternate No. 4: Juror #4192 (Male, 25 yrs old). He is single, no kids, lives with parents and is a carpenter. He has worked as a junior counselor and in daycare. His older siblings have four children under the age of 7 yrs, and he has occasionally helped out with them. When asked if there were specific types of crimes for which he thought the death penalty was appropriate, he said he believed it appropriate in cases of rape (Ann Finnell later clarified for him that DP wasn't an option for rape). As a teen, he was busted for drug possession and paraphernalia. He was on probation for a while, but that has long since ended.

Alternate No. 5: Juror #3308 (Male, 39 yrs old). Married, no kids. Works in water management. Served 12 yrs in the Coast Guard. During that service he was involved in searching/apprehension of drug smugglers and the like. This is the juror who had tickets to take his grandma to a Brewers game. He gave them away and the judge has promised to try to get him replacement tickets. Numerous times, he heard the parody song "My Trunk" (parody of "My Humps" and very derogatory toward Anthony) on the "Bubba The Love Sponge" radio show. Reads blogs about motorcycles and guns. He said he was suspicious of LE. When asked why, he asked to go off mic.

**********************************************

Panel of 12 jurors: As best I can tell, two minorities (both African American -- Jurors #1019 and #1319). There are 7 women and 5 men on the panel of twelve jurors.

Alternates: No minorities; 3 men and 2 women in this group of jurors.

How does it work if one of the 12 is excused for some reason during trial? The alternates replace lost jurors in the order of their numbers. Alternate No. 1 would replace the first juror lost; Alternate No. 2 would replace the second; and so on.
